Get ready, EV enthusiasts! Geely is about to launch its Galaxy Starshine 7, a plug-in hybrid sedan that's making waves with its impressive specs. This new model boasts a remarkable all-electric range and a sleek design, but is it enough to capture the market? Let's dive in!
This exciting new car has been revealed after the release of China’s MIIT, which is the “23rd Batch of New Energy Vehicles Eligible for Vehicle Purchase Tax Reduction.” The Starshine 7 is set to offer two lithium-iron-phosphate battery options. The first one is an 18.99 kWh pack, which delivers between 115-120 km of pure electric range. The second one is a 28.3 kWh pack, with a range of up to 165 km. The launch is expected to happen later this year in China.
The Starshine 7 sticks to the design language of Geely Galaxy's Starshine series. It has a nearly five-meter-long body, measuring 4,958 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width, and 1,505 mm in height, with a 2,852 mm wheelbase. Depending on the configuration, the curb weight is specified at 1,815 kg or 1,860 kg.
On the outside, the front end is eye-catching with a large trapezoidal grille that has vertical waterfall-style chrome strips. It also has polygonal multi-source LED headlights and a three-section front bumper that has intricate air intakes. In the back, there's a horizontal taillight cluster that has the “GEELY” logo. There are also optional features like different grille and rim designs, privacy glass, radar and camera systems, and 225/55R18 or 235/45R19 tyres.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Starshine 7 has Geely’s new-generation NordThor AI Hybrid 2.0 system. This system has a 1.5 L engine (model BHE15-BFN) that has 82 kW (110 hp), paired with an electric motor that produces up to 120 kW (160 hp). The top speed is 190 km/h. This hybrid system is combined with the two battery options mentioned above, allowing for the reported electric ranges.
For context, the Starshine 6 and Starshine 8 are already available in the Chinese market. The Starshine 6, which started pre-sales in September, measures 4,806/1,886/1,490 mm with a 2,756 mm wheelbase and offers up to 125 km of pure electric range with its high-end 17 kWh battery. The Starshine 8 is priced between 115,800 and 155,800 yuan (16,300 to 21,900 USD).
But here's where it gets interesting... Could the Starshine 7's features and range make it a game-changer in the plug-in hybrid market? Or will it face tough competition from its own siblings and other models?
