Android phones are skipping Qi2, and Nothing thinks it knows why. But is it really that simple?
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) finalized the Qi2 standard in the second half of 2023, revolutionizing wireless charging with built-in magnets. Yet, despite its potential, Android brands have been hesitant to adopt it. Google's Pixel 10 lineup is the only Android device fully embracing Qi2 this year, while Samsung opted for Qi2 Ready compatibility, requiring special cases for a similar experience.
A member of the Nothing content team explains that legal red tape and industry politics are to blame. Apple's MagSafe technology, which Qi2 is based on, has patented magnet configurations that are restricted. Developing a custom magnetic wireless charger is complex, as device magnets differ from Apple's, leading to potential misalignment and reduced charging speed. This makes it less appealing for companies, especially when wired charging is faster.
